In order to keep your smile healthy and bright, you need to visit your dentist every six months. Regular visits to your dentist will allow him to clean the plaque and tartar that your toothbrush may have missed. And it will also give your dentist the chance to examine your teeth, tongue, gums and mouth for cavities, gum disease, and cancer. But in between visits, it is up to you to take care of your smile.

Ideally, you should brush twice a day and floss once a day. However, depending on your dental health, your dentist might have you brush more often. To effectively brush your teeth, you should use a soft-bristled toothbrush with a head that is small enough to reach every part of your mouth. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth, and brush the fronts, backs, and chewing and biting surfaces. To reach the insides of your front teeth, hold your toothbrush vertically and brush with short strokes. If you want to brush after a meal, it is a good idea to wait thirty minutes in order to give your saliva time to cleanse the acids leftover from your food that are on your teeth.

To floss, you will need about 18 total inches of floss. Use about one to two inches, and curve the floss around your tooth. Start by flossing below, and then away from your gumline. Work from your back teeth to your front teeth. Use a fresh piece of floss for each tooth and be sure to dispose of the used floss when you are done.
